Central Styria consists of the central Mur area, the Graz Basin, the Grazer Feld and the Leibnitzer Feld. The landscape is dominated by hills and mountains.

The capital city, Graz, has roughly a quarter of a million residents, which is 25% of the total population of Styria.

The mountain within easiest reach of the residents of Graz and surroundings is the „Schöckel“ near the spa town of St. Radegund.
